A shop built around instruments

There is no secret to this trade. There is a set of measurements that tell you what is actually happening, and a widespread habit of not taking them.

Plain white service van parked outside a low tilt-up building, rear doors open showing labelled shelving.
Who we are

East Middlefield Road, both halves of the work

The shop is on East Middlefield in Mountain View, which is a street of low tilt-up buildings full of office and R&D suites, in a town that is otherwise ranch houses and townhouses. Both of those are ten minutes away, which is roughly how the business ended up doing both.

It is a small operation. The person who takes the readings is the person who does the work, and there is no sales department, because there are not enough of us to have one.

We keep the service radius tight for the same reason we take measurements: so that what we tell you is something we can actually stand behind.

Method

Five things we will not bend on

01 Measure
An instrument before an opinionNothing gets recommended on the strength of how a system sounds or how old it looks. If we cannot produce a number that supports the recommendation, we do not make it.
02 Document
The readings are yoursEvery diagnostic visit ends with a sheet you keep — values, expected ranges, photographs and a conclusion. Take it to another contractor if you like. That is a feature, not a risk.
03 Price first
In writing, approved by youIf something else appears once a panel is off, we stop and re-quote rather than continuing and explaining on the invoice.
04 No commission
Nobody earns more by selling equipmentIt is the only arrangement under which "the readings are fine, the problem is a closed damper" can be a normal outcome of a visit.
05 Say the boring thing
Including when it loses us the jobSometimes the honest answer is that the duct system needs the money more than the equipment does, or that the unit has three good years left. We say it and we put the numbers next to it.
Credentials

The boring part that protects you

Ask any contractor for these before they touch the building. We would rather you did.

Bonded & insured

Contractor's bond, general liability and workers' compensation in force. Certificates of insurance issued to your entity on request before work starts.

Refrigerant handling

EPA Section 608 certified technicians, proper recovery equipment, and refrigerant purchase and disposal recorded as the regulations require.

Permits & Title 24

Permits pulled on changeouts that need them, Title 24 documentation prepared, inspections scheduled, closed permits handed over in the job file.

Limits

What we do not take on

Being clear about the edges is part of being trustworthy inside them.

  • Large commercial mechanical projects, chillers and central plant. Different scale, different trade.
  • Commercial refrigeration — walk-ins, cases, cold storage.
  • A 24-hour emergency dispatch service. We are too small to staff it honestly, and we say so on the commercial page.
  • Jobs well outside the mid-Peninsula. If we cannot get back quickly, we should not have taken it.
  • Installing equipment somebody else supplied. We warranty what we fit, which means we choose it.
